Getting to know Taky? Here’s how tags, blocking and those just-in-case unlocks work.
Getting started
Is my phone compatible with Taky?
Taky needs an Android phone running Android 12 or later, with NFC. Check your phone’s settings for NFC before getting a tag.
Is Taky available on Android?
Taky is coming soon for Android. The interactive preview on this website lets you explore the idea while you wait; it does not block apps on your phone.
How do I set up Taky on my Android?
When Taky launches, install the app and follow Setup to enable accessibility access for blocking. Enable the additional permissions for the features you choose, such as usage access for App Goals and precise alarms for timed breaks.
Turn on NFC, go to Setup → NFC → Add tag, and scan your tag. To use a writable, NDEF-compatible tag while another app is open, first choose Flash an NFC Tag, then add it. Flashing replaces any existing data on the tag. Choose a blocking mode, then scan your paired tag or use the in-app control to start.
How do I set up Taky on my iPhone?
Taky is built for Android. There is no iPhone version available, so you cannot set it up on iOS.
Which NFC tags work with Taky?
Taky supports most NFC tags your phone can read, including compatible stickers, cards and key fobs. You don’t need a Taky-branded device. Compatibility depends on both your phone and the tag.
Pair a tag in Setup → NFC. Blank tags can work while Taky is open. Scanning from another app needs a writable, NDEF-compatible tag programmed with Taky’s flashing tool. You can pair up to five tags.
Do I need a subscription?
No. Taky is designed with a seven-day free trial that starts when you add your first NFC tag, followed by a one-time purchase through Google Play for permanent access. A compatible NFC tag is separate.
Blocking & unblocking
How is Taky different from Apple’s Screen Time or Android Digital Wellbeing?
Taky adds a physical step to your focus routine: leave a paired NFC tag away from your phone and go back to it when you want to unblock. Save modes for different parts of your day, schedule blocking, and use countdowns to return to focus after a break.
Move Goals and App Goals can require you to finish an activity before normal tag unlocking becomes available. Taky runs on Android; it does not extend Apple’s Screen Time.
Can’t I just delete the app or find a workaround?
Taky is a tool for self-control, and it relies on your commitment. Keeping your tag out of reach adds a useful pause before you return to distracting apps. It helps you stick to the boundaries you choose, but it isn’t impossible to bypass.
What can I block with Taky?
Create modes that block selected apps or allow only the apps you choose. Essential system apps, including Phone and your launcher, stay accessible. There is no product limit on the number of modes you can save.
Website rules work with readable address bars in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Samsung Internet. Private or custom browser screens, other browsers and embedded web views may bypass those rules. Taky is not a VPN or a universal web filter.
How do I block my phone without my NFC tag?
Use the blocking control on Taky’s Home screen to start with your chosen mode, or let an enabled Focus schedule start blocking for you. You normally need a paired tag to unblock. If a Move Goal or App Goal is active, complete all active requirements before normal tag unlocking becomes available.
Emergencies & privacy
What happens if I lose my NFC tag?
Use another paired tag, or choose Emergency unlock on Home. You get five emergency unlocks per calendar month, resetting at midnight on the first of the month in your phone’s local time.
If countdowns are enabled, you can use the current countdown or choose to unblock without it. Both options use one emergency unlock. Unblocking without a countdown ends the current session without an automatic return to blocking; future schedules can still start. You can add a replacement tag in Setup → NFC.
What if I’ve used all my emergency unlocks?
Email us if you’ve used all five emergency unlocks and need help getting back into your apps. Your monthly allowance resets automatically on the first of each month.
Email hello@taky-focus.appDo you track which apps I block?
Your block lists, settings and focus history are stored on your phone. Taky processes blocking rules locally and does not attach your app lists, usage, website rules or NFC tag IDs to its custom error reports.
The standard app sends technical crash diagnostics to Google Firebase Crashlytics. Automatic crash reports can include contextual values. Taky has no advertising trackers or Google Analytics; see our Privacy Policy for the details.
